Sustainability has been a top priority in PRINCE2® since the new edition 7. We are not only talking about sustainability currently perceived by the general public in connection with the environment & climate, but also the consideration of social, economic and ecological aspects. Projects should be designed in such a way that they make a positive contribution.
Traditionally, project management focused on six key performance aspects: benefits, costs, time, quality, scope, and risk. PRINCE2® 7 breaks this conventional framework by introducing a seventh aspect — sustainability. During the entire project life cycle, the sustainability aspect becomes an important control parameter. This shift encourages project managers and stakeholders to consider the impact of their actions not only on immediate project outcomes but also on wider sustainability goals.
Integrating sustainability into PRINCE2® 7 is a change of mindset and approach. The sustainability aspect pervades all practices and brings purpose and responsibility to every phase of the project. For example, in the “Organization” chapter, the sustainability goals of suitable people in appropriate roles are taken into account. Similarly, in the “Risk” chapter, the sustainability goals are assessed together with other project goals and aspects.
By embedding sustainability into PRINCE2® 7 practices, the methodology triggers a cultural change that places sustainability at the heart of decision-making processes. This change goes beyond immediate project goals and promotes a mindset that recognizes the long-term consequences of today's actions.
The integration of sustainability into PRINCE2® 7 reflects a visionary approach that goes beyond the limits of traditional project management. Development was based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations.
