How did you come to join exccon – and why have you stayed?

I joined exccon through personal contacts and a foundation of trust that had developed long before I officially started.  It was not a spontaneous move but a decision that matured over a longer period until the timing felt right. I’ve stayed because personal appreciation at exccon is more than just a buzzword. Even through changes in management, that sense of trust has remained. Plus, there have always been common goals that I could work toward togetzer with my colleagues.

You originally studied physics. How did you end up in IT, and what did you do before you joined exccon?

After completing my degree in physics, the job market for physicists was very challenging due to the changes following German reunification. At the same time, computers were already an essential tool in physics, and I had already been earning money through IT-related work during my studies. Continuing down that path felt like a natural step. IT came easily to me, the market was rapdily growing, and looking back, it proved to be a very good decision to build my professional foundation in this field.Before joining exccon, I worked as an ITIL process owner in the global IT department of one of the "Big Four" accounting firms, where I responsible for building and operateing hybrid data centers.

What do you like about exccon, and what do you appreciate about the team?

What I value most at exccon is the human environment, the open communication, and the strong team spirit. We take our work seriously, but we approach challenges with a sense of humor at the same time. That´s a combination ewhich means a lot to me. I appreciate the trust people place in each other and the way we work together to find solutions. For me, this sense of togetherness is an important part of the "exccon family": mutual trust, appreciation, and the feeling of achieving something together.

Is there a funny anecdote from your daily work life at exccon?

When you have important conference calls at the Munich office,  make sure to factor in the church bells!

You are a Principal Consultant at exccon. What exactly do you do?

As a Principal Consultant, I advise customers on how to work with infrastructure data in the Now Platform. I act as both an IT architect and as a technical specialist for hybrid infrastructures. I support other consultants in their analyses and help developers during the implementation process. It is particularly important to me to present technical concepts in a way that they are understandable from the client's perspective. It’s about bridging the gap between the producer's view and the client's view of IT processes - professionally sound, technically robust, and focused on the client's actual services.

What does a typical workday look like for you?

A classic workday starts at the computer. I attend online meetings, connect to customer environments, analyze code, data, and process documentation, write concepts and user stories, and dive into specific technical challenges. This also involves using vendor documentation and using AI for support. Another important part of my daily routine is supporting colleagues when they have questions or or encounter complex issues.

Why do you enjoy your job at exccon?

I am fascinated by the breadth and depth of the challenges I get to resolve in client environments. No two topics are the same: one day it may be the infrastructure data, the next ITSM or ITOM processes, or perhaps governance, compliance, or service portfolios. It is precisely this combination of analysis, consulting, technical depth, and translation between business and technology which makes my job so interesting. I also enjoy understanding new things – and passing that knowledge on to my colleagues.

One of the most rewarding moments is when customers recognize that we have delivered real value. Seeing the impact of our work and knowing that exccon has made a meaningful contribution gives me a great sense of satisfaction. It shows that our expertise is not just theoretical but truly helps customers in practice.

What skills are important for your role?

You need excellent canalytical skills, broad infrastructure knowledge, and solid expertise in the Now Platform. Practical experience with ITIL and a strong understanding of IT governance and compliance are also helpful. However, technical knowledge alone is not enough. You must be able to translate both technical and business requirements in both directions: understanding what the customer needs while also explaining what is technically feasible and appropriate.

You work almost entirely remotely. What does working from home mean to you?

For me, working from home primarily means a peaceful and quiet environment for focused work and less time wasted on the road. Many of my customers involve me via virtual environments, and the client organizations themselves are often globally distributed, which means most meetings take place online anyway. At the same time, a sense of team spirit still needs to be consciously nurtured in a remote setting. At exccon, we maintain it through company events, intensive chat communication, the KnowledgeBite series, and shared learning content.

How do you balance family life, leisure time, and work?

When I need flexibility, I get it. That is something I value highly because it shows that trust is not limited to project work but extends to everyday life as well. After work, it is important for me to truly disconnect and spend time with my wife. In my free time, I deliberately avoid thinking about work, and ballroom and Latin dancing provide the perfect balance.

What is important to you as a leader?

I value employees who are engaged, attentive, and able to organize themselves effectively. In job interviews, I pay particular attention to authenticity. My advice to candidates is simple: be yourself and keep learning. What matters to me is that people are genuine, remain curious, and are willing to grow.
